There are some holidays that feel fancy.
Some that feel meaningful.
And then there are the ones that feel like summer memories in a frosty mug.
National Black Cow Day is absolutely one of those.
Around here, Duncan takes this celebration very seriously.
The hat comes out.
The giant mug appears.
And somehow there’s always vanilla ice cream involved before noon.
If you’ve never had a Black Cow before, it’s the old-school name for a root beer float — cold root
beer poured over creamy vanilla ice cream until the whole thing foams into fizzy perfection. It’s
messy, nostalgic, ridiculously sweet, and honestly impossible not to smile at.
Duncan insists the secret is:
extra frosty mugs
slow pouring
and “a heroic amount of ice cream”
We’re not arguing with the expert.
Today’s featured gremlin portrait captures Duncan in full Root Beer Legend mode, proudly guarding
his float like it’s sacred treasure. Judging by the size of that mug, he may not share.
And honestly? Fair enough.
Whether you grew up calling them Black Cows, root beer floats, or “summer in a glass,” today is a
perfect excuse to lean into something delightfully simple and comforting.
So grab a straw, embrace the sugar rush, and celebrate properly.
The recipe button below the artwork will take you straight to
Duncan’s favourite Black Cow recipe so you can make one yourself.
Just be warned:
once the gremlins discover root beer floats, they tend to expect them regularly.
